Craniosacral Therapy Explained (Upledger Institute®)

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) evaluates and enhances the functioning of the craniosacral system — the meninges [protective membranes] and cerebrospinal fluid [the fluid cushioning the brain and spinal cord] surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Using a calibrated touch of approximately 5 grams, the practitioner identifies and releases restrictions in fascial [connective tissue], membranous, and osseous [bony] structures housing the central nervous system.  The discovery of the glymphatic system [the brain’s waste-clearance pathway] — a brain-wide perivascular pathway facilitating CSF recirculation and metabolic waste clearance — provides scientific context for CST’s potential mechanisms.

Glymphatic clearance of amyloid-beta and tau proteins [substances that accumulate in Alzheimer’s disease] increases ~60% during sleep (Xie et al., Science, 2013). CST techniques including CV4 [a specific cranial technique], dural tube manipulation, and cranial base release work directly with the structures through which CSF flows.

Practitioner: Berdene Segal is a CranioSacral Therapy Practitioner with certificates from the Upledger Institute® in SomatoEmotional Release and CST Touching The Brain: Stimulating Self-Correction Through the Glial Interface – CTTB1:  / CranioSacral Therapy for the Central Nervous System. Her 40 years of clinical experience provide the anatomical assessment skills essential to effective CST practice.

What Patients Will Experience

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on treatment that works with the fluid and membranes surrounding your brain and spinal cord. Using a very light touch, the practitioner identifies areas of tension or restriction and helps release them, supporting your body’s own ability to heal.  Most patients find sessions deeply relaxing. You remain fully clothed on a comfortable treatment table while the practitioner places their hands lightly on various areas of your body. Sessions typically last 45–60 minutes.  CST is suitable for all ages, from newborns to older adults, and is gentle enough for those with fragile or acute conditions.
